Some years back when they still had a factory in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in my neck of the woods, I called them up and had a serial number date discussion. One of the things they told me was that Yamaha starts serial numbers from scratch with each model number. YTS-23 has been around a long time and your serial number is pretty low.
For sale is a Yamaha YAS 23 Saxophone with serial number 207229. Perfect instrument for schools and students. This is a used unit (we bought it used) and has some scratches and brassing but has been recently serviced and all valves and pads are in good shape. It comes with a soft case which we bought new 2 years ago when we bought the Sax (extra and better to the standard box), additional reeds and maintenance

Note: Alto saxophones are prefaced by YAS (for Yamaha Alto Saxophone), while tenor saxophones are prefaced by YTS.Flashy technique and altissimo are all fine and good, but a rich, powerful, and distinctive saxophone sound that truly grabs your listeners is the hallmark of any great player. Thing is, without the correct methods, you're likely to waste time, looking for the perfect setup and trying to make sense of vague and conflicting instruction from books, videos, and private teachers.
Best for those just starting out, this YAS-23 Yamaha student saxophone typically runs about $1,300 new or $500 used. The YTS-23 tenor sax costs about $2200 new and about $500 used. With optimum intonation and an emphasis on comfort and durability, the 23 series is perfect to help new players get a hang of their instrument.
My son is with a R&B band that just released their debut their album/CD. They tour the U.S., Canada, and Europe. He wants to replace his student tenor sax, Yamaha Vito 7131TK, with a used pro vintage tenor sax for $2000 or less. Could someone with some expertise and knowledge suggest brands, models, and serial number production years that would meet this criterion?
Renting is a good option for students who are not 100% sure if this whole playing saxophone thing is going to work out or not. Also, renting a few different models or types of saxes is a good idea. Do you like the feel and sound of a tenor or an alto, baritone, or soprano? Most students start with alto or tenor. These two types are also easier to find as rentals because of their popularity. A good thing to note is that once you learn how to play one type of sax, the others are very much the same. Fingering is identical and so is the embouchure so picking up a different one is not very different, except for the feeling of size difference.
The next highly popular model, and probably their most sought after saxophone of all time came out in 1954 and was called the Mark VI. It boasted mechanical and acoustic improvements over the earlier models. It was made for the six most popular saxophone types: sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and bass.
The 500 series come in at around $2500. Look for models numbers such as TS500 (tenor) and TS500 Aristocrat, AS500 (alto) and AS500 Aristocrat. The 500 model being made in Taiwan and the Aristocrat in the USA. 2ff7e9595c
